R&P Post 8: Possible tracks for the single

At the beginning of our creative process we sent ideas around on our WhatsApp group chat of songs which could work, which can be seen below. One aspect that we agreed on at the beginning is that we would have a female vocalist and use either myself of Phoebe as the artist to keep our video within the group.

Zedd- Addicted to a Memory

To begin with we were quite interested in using an EDM track such as the one above by Zedd

Positives:
  • Clear beat throughout which would allow for cutting to the beat
  • Airy quality to the lyrics with very interesting harmonies
  • An unusual almost sci-fi atmosphere/mood created
  • Instrumentation progresses throughout the track
  • Alarm sounds at 3:30
Negatives
  • Length is too long at 5:01 so we would have to cut the length down
  • Becomes rather repetitive which could prove problematical in keeping an audience engaged and interested
  • A clear narrative is not really created in the lyrics
  • Creating a visual mood to match the musical mood would be difficult

Daya- Don't Let Me Down

The first song idea sent on the group chat was Don't Let Me Down.

Positives:
  • Very strong female vocalist
  • Blend of Pop and Dance (which are doing very well in the UK)
  • Strong independent artist
  • Clear difference in instrumentation in the verses and chorus
  • Strong beat especially in the chorus
Negatives:
  • Is well known as it reached No.2 spot on Official Singles chart in the UK and has 322,000+ views on YouTube
  • Slightly too long
  • Has a well known music videos so ours would have to be very different

Daya -Sit Still Look Pretty

After seeing Phoebe's suggestion of Don't Let Me Down on the group chat I listened to other songs by Daya and found Sit Still Look Pretty which I sent to the group chat with the comment: "It's got good lyrics/imagery possibilities!"
Our group chat ideas
Positives:
  • Strong unique-sounding female artist
  • Clear pulse for cutting to the beat
  • Not well-known with only 8 million YouTube views for a lyric video and 2 million for the actual music video
  • Can be simply cut down to almost exactly 3 minutes  by getting rid of the final chorus and the two final echos of "sit still look pretty"
  • Feminist message
  • Very catchy
  • Brilliant lyrics for creating imagery (see below)
Negatives:
  • Could get too repetitive
  • We could not create imagery for every line as could become too over the top for an audience
  • Not make it too feminist as that could alienate men from watching it
Key Lyrics:

"I'm never gunna be that girl
Who's living in a Barbie world"

"But I don't wanna be the puppet that you're playing on a string
This queen don't need a king."

"You get off on your nine to five
Dream of picket fences and trophy wives."
